One question we often hear from older patients considering dental treatment is whether they may have waited too long for dental implants.

For many people in their 60s, 70s or even later in life, age itself is not necessarily the deciding factor. What matters more is the condition of the jawbone, the health of the gums and the patient’s overall health.

This is why implant treatment should always begin with an individual assessment rather than a decision based on age alone.

Before planning dental implant treatment, the dentist will carefully examine the mouth and review the condition of the remaining teeth and gums. A 3D CT scan may also be used to assess the available bone and help determine where an implant could be positioned safely and appropriately.

Bone condition can be particularly important for patients who have been missing teeth for a long time. After tooth loss, the bone in that area may gradually reduce in volume. This does not automatically mean implants are no longer possible.

If there is not enough bone to support an implant, the dentist may discuss bone grafting or another suitable treatment approach, depending on the individual situation.

The important point is that there is no single age at which someone suddenly becomes “too old” for dental implants.

A healthy person in their 70s may sometimes be a more suitable candidate than a younger person with significant gum disease, poor bone condition or other factors that need to be addressed first.
