Upper premolar and molar implants can be more complex because the maxillary sinus sits close to the tooth roots. When bone height is insufficient, a sinus lift raises the sinus membrane and places grafting material beneath it to create support for an implant. The decision must follow imaging and a clinical examination.

Why Upper Back Teeth May Need a Sinus Lift

The maxillary sinuses sit above the upper back teeth. After a tooth is removed, the ridge can lose height and width, while the sinus may expand into the space previously occupied by the tooth roots. Long-term tooth loss, gum disease and individual sinus anatomy can therefore leave too little bone for a conventional implant.

Patients considering dental implants in Vietnam should provide a recent panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan for preliminary review. CBCT shows the available bone, sinus shape, membrane condition and intended implant position. An in-person examination is still required before treatment is confirmed.

Closed vs Open Sinus Lift

A closed sinus lift, also called a crestal or internal lift, is performed through the implant site. The dentist carefully raises the sinus floor and places a limited amount of graft material. It is generally considered when only a modest increase in bone height is required and enough existing bone remains to stabilise the implant.

An open sinus lift uses a small lateral window in the upper jaw to elevate the membrane and create more space for graft material. It may be recommended when bone loss is greater. “Open” describes the surgical access; it does not mean the sinus is left open. The technique depends on the CBCT findings.

Implant Placement and the Treatment Process

Both procedures are commonly performed under local anaesthesia. Sedation may be discussed for anxiety or a more involved operation. Graft material is placed beneath the elevated membrane, and the area is closed with sutures.

The implant may be inserted during the same appointment if the remaining bone can provide sufficient initial stability. If stability is uncertain or a larger graft is required, the sinus lift may be completed first and the implant placed after healing. This distinction matters for overseas patients: simultaneous placement may fit into a two-stage implant journey, while staged surgery can add another clinical visit.

Sinus Lift Cost in Vietnam

Patients with extensive tooth loss may also be assessed for All-on-4 or All-on-6 full-arch implants. Angled implant placement can sometimes reduce the need to graft the posterior upper jaw, but it does not eliminate grafting in every case.

Healing Time, Travel and Recovery

Initial swelling and discomfort usually improve within one to two weeks, but bone maturation takes longer. A staged graft may need several months of healing before implant placement, depending on graft size, bone quality and the surgeon’s assessment.

Allow time in Vietnam for review before flying home rather than planning departure immediately after surgery. Follow the surgeon’s instructions about flying, exercise and medication. Patients are commonly advised not to blow their nose, sneeze with the mouth closed, smoke, use straws or perform strenuous activity during early healing because pressure can disturb the graft or sinus membrane.
