For Jayne, travelling from New Zealand to Vietnam for dental treatment came after years of frustration with worn and previously repaired teeth.

She explained that she has a long-standing tendency to grind her teeth at night, which had left her teeth noticeably worn over time. A couple of years earlier, she had already had her four front teeth rebuilt. But one evening at home, while brushing and flossing, one of the newly restored teeth came out and struck the bathroom mirror.

“That’s it. I’m not spending any more money,” she remembered thinking at the time.

Jayne had already seen dental treatment advertisements on Instagram and Facebook. More importantly, she also knew people who had travelled to this part of the world for dental care and had been pleased with their experience. That combination of personal frustration and reassurance from others helped her decide that the time was right to consider treatment in Vietnam.

It was Jayne’s first visit to Vietnam. She came with a straightforward goal: to address teeth that, in her own words, were “no good” and to understand what could be done.

During the process, she appreciated being told what needed to be done and being shown information on the computer after her procedure. For someone receiving treatment away from home, having the treatment explained clearly was an important part of the experience.

Jayne also spoke positively about how she felt during the procedure.

“I didn’t feel anything during the operation. I would highly recommend it.”

Looking back, her strongest reaction was simple:

“I only wish I had done it sooner.”

By the end of her treatment journey, Jayne said it felt good to be able to smile again and feel better about how she looked. She joked that her nephew now thinks she looks younger than before.

Her interview also captured some of the lighter moments of being in Vietnam. Jayne spoke enthusiastically about enjoying coffee, wine and chocolate, adding with a smile that Vietnamese coffee was “the best.”
